How to Get Beautiful Oval Cut Diamond Studs Without Paying a Fortune
Oval cut diamonds have a very interesting shape that serves as a good alternative to the round cut. By choosing an oval cut, you can give the illusion that your diamond is bigger while paying less than you would for a similar round cut.
I’ve worked in the jewellery business for many years, and some of the most beautiful earrings that I’ve seen with the best sparkle were oval cut diamond studs. They shine with a brilliance that is very similar to a round cut, but offer a shape that can make your earrings look unique in a market that is dominated by round cuts.
The problem is, most people don’t know what to look for in an oval cut diamond, since they are so used to seeing round ones. Some of the same rules apply, but a lot of them don’t, and you need an experienced jeweller to guide you on how to assess your diamonds before you spend your hard-earned money on them.
I’ll share with you my experience as a professional jeweller today so that you can avoid many of the common mistakes and find the most beautiful diamond with the best sparkle for you.
Focus on the Right Length to Width Ratios
This largely depends on taste, but oval cut diamonds come in different length-to-width ratios, and you will have to choose the right one for you. If you’re not sure, the best place to start is with the so-called “golden ratio,” which is roughly 1.6, and work from there. Most people prefer a diamond with proportions like this, but you may want one that is more or less skinny.
The higher the ratio of length to width, the longer and skinnier the diamond is, and the more it draws the eye of the viewer vertically. So if you want a nice elongated shape to your ear lobes, then choose a diamond with a higher length-to-width ratio.
Don’t Pay More for Oval Diamonds
While oval diamonds will often look bigger than round diamonds of the same carat weight, they should naturally be cheaper simply because they are less sought-after than the more common round cut. In fact, that is one of the major advantages of an oval cut—the fact that you can get a larger-looking diamond for a less expensive price.
Granted, a quality diamond is still never cheap, so don’t expect extremely low prices, either. As with any kind of diamond, if the price is too low, you can pretty much guarantee that it will be ugly and not have as brilliant of a sparkle.
You can greatly reduce your chances of buying an inferior diamond by simply purchasing from a reputable jeweller and putting the quality of your jewellery as your first priority, rather than the price. Buying from an Australian jeweller, even if you’re buying online, is also a great safeguard against being scammed or simply being sold an inferior product at inflated prices.
Visual Inspection By a Jeweller is More Important Than the Certificate
While it’s important to make sure that the diamonds you’re looking at are GIA certified—and any reputable jeweller would not offer you anything less—the bottom line is that only a good visual inspection will tell you everything you should know about a specific diamond.
This is especially true for an oval cut diamond, since it may not be bound by many of the traditional aspects of a round cut and the GIA does not grade these kinds of diamonds based on cuts.
For example, many oval cut diamonds have what is called the “bow tie effect,” which means that the middle part of the table does not reflect the light. This means that its sparkle is not present in that area, and this is actually both expected and desired on an oval diamond, as long as the effect isn’t too pronounced and most of the diamond still sparkles.
These traits are not assessed by the GIA, so you can’t go by the certificate. You will need a qualified jeweller to inspect your diamond closely and to make sure that it is well-proportioned and has the right amount of sparkle. A good jeweller will only offer you an oval cut diamond that reflects light brilliantly, almost on par with the level of a round cut diamond.
Get Strong Settings
Oval cut earrings need strong, quality settings or else you could potentially lose them because they can fall out. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people buy cheap jewellery and lose their brilliant diamonds because they didn’t want to pay for well-made settings. Besides, there’s little point in spending so much energy finding the most beautiful, most sparkly diamond if you are going to have it made into cheap, ugly jewellery.
Just as you must be careful when choosing where you buy your diamond, you should also look for a jeweller who can provide you with durable, beautiful settings that will stand the test of time. Strong premium quality white gold is what you need. You should find a jeweller who knows what he’s doing and can choose the right settings for the exact cut and proportions of your diamonds.
This takes experience on the part of the jeweller, of course, which is why it pays to hire a company that has been in the business for years. Another way that you can ensure quality is to choose a company that operates out of Australia. Unlike cheap overseas dealers than may be trying to push low quality diamonds, Australian companies are bound by certain business standards, so you can trust them to deliver what you need.
