Everything You Need to Know About Radiant Cut Diamonds
Radiant cut diamonds are beautiful when they have been cut and polished well.
On the flip side, radiant cuts are super ugly if not cut and polished well.
So if you are thinking about getting a pair of radiant cut diamond stud earrings, you may want to read this guide first.
I’m a professional jeweller who makes diamond studs every day. I have bought and sold 1000s of radiant cut diamonds.
Today I will teach you every you need to know before buying your studs and show you how to get the best radiant shaped diamonds.
3 Most Important Things You Need to Know About Radiant Cuts
Radiant Cut Diamonds Come in 2 Styles – Some are Ugly
Radiant cut diamonds come in 2 shape patterns – square and rectangle.
Take a look at the image below to see the difference.
Over the years, I have noticed that the best radiant cut diamonds are the square style diamonds. They tend to have a much better sparkle and beauty to the eye.
The long rectangle style of radiant cuts are more often poorly cut and look ugly.
This does not mean that every square cut radiant diamond is beautiful. The sparkle and beauty of each radiant cut diamond comes from how well cut and polished the diamond is.
So lets move on to cut quality.
Cut Quality is Everything: Poor Cut Means Ugly Radiant Cut Diamonds
Poorly cut and polished radiant shape diamonds look ugly. Just see the image below. This is one ugly diamond.
It’s a rectangular style radiant diamond and has a poor cut quality. This diamond looks like rubbish. It’s worthless.
Cut quality is not graded by diamond certification labs.
If you want the best radiant cut diamonds, you need to work with a professional jeweller who knows how to find and choose them.
A well cut radiant diamond is a beautiful, sparkling diamond with amazing fire. That’s what you want.
But finding these diamonds is not easy. Most radiant cut diamonds on the market do not have a great cut quality. It takes rejecting lots of diamonds to locate the beautiful diamonds.
Unless you are highly experienced buying and trading in radiant cut diamonds, choosing diamonds from a big list is a very bad idea.
F or Better Colour Grade
Any tint or shade of colour will be obvious in a radiant cut diamond. Radiant cut diamonds show any colour very easily and obviously.
That’s why you want a high colour grade diamond.
A diamond that does not show any obvious tint or shade of colour. I suggest F colour grade or better.
Here at Forktip, we only offer colourless diamonds – diamonds that look white without any visible colour tints or shades. These are the highest quality diamonds.
You also want a diamond with no visible imperfections (inclusions). The level of visible imperfections is called the clarity grade.
The clarity grade required to get a diamond with no visible imperfections changes from diamond to diamond.
I look at diamonds individually to see whether they have any visible imperfections. We reject diamonds with visible imperfections and only offer diamonds with no visible issues.
Make Sure Your Diamonds Have GIA Certification
I buy diamonds every day. I won’t purchase diamonds without GIA certificates.
So you definitely should not buy diamonds that do not have GIA certificates.
GIA certification is the diamond industry standard. High quality diamonds are always traded with GIA certificates.
It’s still important to remember that GIA certificates only tell half the story. You can’t rely on certificates alone. Many poor quality diamonds have GIA certificates too.
The diamond’s certificate is just one part. It will show you the colour and clarity grade for your diamonds. It won’t tell you the diamond’s overall quality or value.
You still need a professional jeweller to select the best diamonds.
