Round Diamond Studs Buyer’s Guide

Head Jeweller

Since the early 20th century, the round cut was established as the most beautiful cut that gave the best sparkle. For this reason, you will find that the majority of diamonds come in this style of cut.

If you want to have the most brilliant shine in your jewellery, then round diamond stud earrings are a great choice.

Being a jeweller requires an eye for detail, and after being in this trade for quite a few years, I started to notice patterns. The first thing I notice when I see a diamond is of course the cut, and most beautiful jewellery with a brilliant shine comes with a round diamond cut.

Other cuts can certainly be brilliant, but much of the time, the perfect angles of a round cut just show off the diamond much more.

Another thing that I’ve noticed is that people overpay for round diamonds a lot, too, especially when they don’t know what they’re doing. Round diamonds are generally more expensive than other kinds, so you can easily waste your money if you’re not careful.

If you want some of the knowledge of an expert to help you pick the right diamond for you at a fair price, then read on.

Stay Away From Suspiciously Cheap Diamonds

The first rule for not getting ripped off is to stay away from suspiciously cheap diamonds. Round cut diamonds are a bit more expensive than the other shapes because more of the original rough diamond must be wasted to achieve this shape. If the price doesn’t reflect this, then put up your guard and be very wary of the seller.

Yes, you want a diamond for a reasonable price, but if it is much cheaper than market price, then chances are that it will be an ugly or inferior diamond.

The only way to really prevent this is to only buy from a reputable jeweller that is based in Australia, and to avoid buying diamond earrings from overseas companies.

When you’re buying jewellery sight unseen, you have to be extremely careful and are best off choosing a domestic company because they are bound to local regulations. A jeweller from, say, China, may be able to sell you dirt-cheap diamonds, but your diamonds will look exactly like that—dirt cheap.

Cut Quality is Very Important

What makes a round cut diamond beautiful comes down to its proportions. If it is cut well and has all the correct angles, then it will sparkle brilliantly and reflect the light in just the right way. However, a poor cut can easily result in an ugly diamond. The differences are sometimes subtle enough that only an experienced eye would be able to see them.

If you want the most beautiful diamond you can buy, then seek out an experienced jeweler. Someone with a few years under his belt will be able to judge the proportions of the diamond and choose one that has the best sparkle and brilliance.

Make Sure Your Diamond is GIA Certified

There are many things to take into account when choosing your round diamond stud earrings, but one of the major things you should look for is that your diamond is GIA certified. If it’s not, this is a sign that something is amiss.

The GIA is a trusted source that will honestly assess and certify quality diamonds. If a diamond is not certified, then it’s possible that the jeweller you’re dealing with knows that what he’s selling is low quality.

Any honest jeweller will be upfront with you and will show you evidence that your diamond is of brilliant quality. Don’t waste your money on a company that is blowing hot air, especially if you’re buying online. You could end up with an ugly diamond that you paid way too much money for.

Consider Your Settings Carefully

When choosing what kind of settings you want for your round diamond stud earrings, you’ll have to consider the pros and cons of each and how they work with your diamond’s round shape. There’s no point in having ugly settings when you have a beautiful diamond.

The two main types of settings for stud earrings are pronged settings and bezel settings. The pronged ones hold your diamond up with a few small supports, and this minimalism allows more of the diamond to be seen. The bezel settings surround the outer edge of the diamond completely, so not as much of its sparkle is visible.

There’s a trade-off for both, though. Pronged settings are less safe and the diamond can fall out more easily than a bezel setting. If you are very concerned about your investment, then choose the safer bezel setting and use an experienced jeweler who will make quality settings with only the best materials.

When it comes to materials, try not to be cheap. The best, most durable settings are made of platinum. However, only very clear diamonds will look good with this light-coloured metal, so make sure that you have a high-quality diamond.
